ON MONDAY August 11, 2025, at 11:00 am at the one of the West Oakland Towers located at 1050 7th Street , Brenda Grisham – Community Advocate, tenants, management staff and community members held a Press Conference to address the issues that have been plaguing the towers for many years.
“A local pastor reached out to me July 8,2025 concerned about his church member who lives on the 16th floor of 1050 7th street and could not come out because both elevators were out”, I call Ms. Gibson personally and she began to tell me about the thing that had been going on in the building” said Brenda Grisham
I personally reached out to Councilmember Fife and received no response. I reached out to the Housing Authority via phone and via email the next day with no response, I reached out a week later and said I would be going to the media if I did not hear back from them. I was informed by the resident that one elevator had been fixed, and I received an email with the complaint forms.
On Friday August 8, 2025, I spoke with that same resident who said a recent I team investigation was about yet another building that was having similar problems, but it was not their building.
Saturday, August 9,2025 I visited 1050 7th street and brought the tenants the complaint form that was emailed to me by the Housing Authority for the tenants to fill out and I emailed them back to the Housing Authority that day.
The complaints consisted of the broken elevators, with over 100 residents in the building 1 elevator is not enough, that one elevator smelled of urine, the stair in which they have to use had mold on the walls and was not stable, they complained of rodents, bed bugs and other problems.
One tenant in a wheelchair said he missed his grandfather’s funeral because both elevators were out. Ms. Gibson said: We need the elevators fixed what if we have a fire, nobody cares but we should not have to live like this:
