KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Today, as the nation honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is inviting coaches and athletes to call upon his life and legacy for civil rights, justice and unity as they represent the body of Christ through their sport.
“Dr. King was very adamant about unity, justice and civil rights for all Americans, but particularly in his legacy, African Americans, as they fought for a space in this world,” said FCA Chief Field Officer Rick Isaiah. “Today, as we think about what Dr. King did with his life, think about how you could take your life as a Christ follower, as a minister of the Gospel in the world of sport and FCA to represent his life and his legacy for civil rights, for justice and for the unity of the body of Christ.
As Christ-followers serving in the world of sport, FCA recognizes that we have been entrusted with a powerful platform, and how we steward that influence matters. Dr. King’s example challenges us to lead with humility, pursue justice and elevate love in every environment we serve — especially in spaces shaped by competition.
“For coaches and athletes, as they experience sport and culture, they are encouraged to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy to love unconditionally, to listen and learn from one another, to lament when issues grip their hearts as they grip God’s heart and to leverage their platform for Jesus.”
Our commitment to diversity and unity is grounded in Revelation 7:9 and reflects our belief that the body of Christ on earth should mirror the vision of heaven — where people from every nation, language and culture are united in worship before God’s throne. While the call to love others, including those we oppose, is not always easy, Dr. King’s message reminds us to begin with self-examination, to seek the good in others and to respond with love. At the foundation of both his legacy and our faith is a steadfast commitment to love.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ vision is to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. Its mission is to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. FCA’s guiding values are integrity, serving, teamwork and excellence.
Since 1954, FCA has used the powerful medium of sports and building relationships to reach the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is cultivating Christian principles by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same so that lives are changed for current and future generations.
