Oakland (Special to ZennieReport.com) I, Monesha Jemia Carter, am a registered Democrat. Yes, that matters — and it’s an important opener to the message I’d like to send to the Democratic Party as a whole. It’s time to create structure in all this chaos. No more talking heads here and there — just pure play structure.
That said, I know Democrats often feel they are the righteous party, the one that possesses the ideals the nation should embrace. But somewhere along the way, the party lost its way. During the election, the scare tactics didn’t work, and instead of strengthening, the base of the party weakened. The goal of this message is to recenter the party and remind Democrats that it’s important to do a temperature check — not just a core value judgment.
First, let’s talk planning. The Democratic Party Cabinet Meetings need to start. The party needs to create space for leaders within the party to come together – to convene, to show leadership, and to demonstrate showmanship – proving to the American people that Democrats are fit to lead the country going forward.
These meetings of the minds should take place in a conference room in Washington, DC, biweekly, with limited press invitations announced within 24 hours of the meeting. One seat should be available to a constituent from an elected official’s district.
Each meeting should begin with a call to order and an agenda focused on party unity and the needs of the American people. There should also be flexibility to hold special cabinet meetings around major news cycles and national issues — such as the current government shutdown.
Second, there needs to be an American Promise 2029 — a direct response to Project 2025. The American Promise should be developed and supported by a progressive think tank and laid out as a clear, strategic blueprint for the party to follow. The plan should address critical areas like Supreme Court reform, current laws and future legislation, and the overall direction our country needs to move toward – forward, not backward.
There should be two teams: one dedicated to establishing the cabinet meeting structure and executing American Promise 2029, and another focused on fighting the good fight in real time – tackling the current issues facing the nation.
Third, the party needs to stop “knighting” people to lead. It’s time to shuffle the long line of those waiting for their turn at the helm. Leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Justin Jones, and Jasmine Crockett are ready now. They shouldn’t have to wait until they’re 50 to lead the party.
Fourth, there needs to be outreach and the formation of new organizations for organizing as we head into 2026 and beyond.Where is the fresh blood in organizing? This effort should go beyond race and gender. Organizing should be inclusive — broad-based and forward-thinking.
In closing, the goal here is to throw new and fresh ideas out there and see how they land. America is purple — and the sooner my party gets the memo, the sooner we can adjust.
