California AG Rob Bonta’s Case Against Trump Could Upend Donald Trump’s Washington DC Takeover
President Trump held his press conference introducing his plan to use federal troops as police in Washington DC. His approach was sloppy, even to saying the wrong law in defense of his scheme.
Now, California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s got a new case trial that starts this week.
In his email to Zennie62Media, Bonta said this:
Zenophon, our trial over Trump’s illegal deployment of military troops to the streets of Los Angeles has officially begun.
Here’s the case I’ll be laying out in court this week:
When President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth used federalized California National Guard troops for civilian law enforcement in LA, they acted in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act — a federal law enacted in 1878 that restricts the use of the military in civilian law enforcement.
Their dangerous move had zero precedent in American history.
It pulled servicemembers away from critical work, like fighting the flow of fentanyl into our communities and responding to wildfires. It eroded trust between the public and our military.
They did all of this over the objections of Governor Newsom, against the wishes of local law enforcement, and for reasons absolutely unsupported by conditions on the ground.
And it’s not over: even now, 300 federalized California National Guard members remain on the streets, pulled from essential missions for Trump’s political theater.
The Trump administration will argue in this trial that there should be no limits on what federal troops can do.
They’re wrong.
Our case will clearly demonstrate that this administration has consistently violated the law: making direct use of military personnel to execute the law, ordering federalized California National Guard soldiers to participate in law enforcement operations that have nothing to do with the military, and subjecting civilians to coercive military power.
