In her talk for the 2024 Fall History Series, Kristen Caven explored Oakland’s disdainful attitudes towards one of its towering literary figures, teasing out his personality, triumphs and failures from his poetic quest to be a force for self-expession, sensitivity, and love. She encourages her community to keep seeking the uplifting influence of Joaquin Miller, an extraordinary spirit who rooted himself in early Oakland and helped define our cultural and physical landscape.

Kristen Caven is an Oakland writer, producer, and cultural artist who cartoon-chronicled the 1990 Mills Strike, wrote the Oaktoberfest play, The Dirndl Diaspora, and directed The Zorgos Project, distributing her book The Bullying Antidote to 3,000 Oakland parents.
