Well, it’s clear that Oakland City Administrator Jestin Johnson has something of a personal issue with the woman he fired, Oakland Assistant City Administrator LaTonda Simmons.

To many inside and outside of the City of Oakland, LaTonda Simmons is one of the few city employees considered “untouchable”. In other words, her combination of talent and community respect are such that no one could consider her less than valuable to the City of Oakland. LaTonda, by anyone’s recollection, can’t be considered to be on the wrong side of any major issue.

For example, LaTonda Simmons is the only person not implicated in the activities of the FBI indictment (publicly known). So this action by Oakland City Administrator Jestin Johnson is considered both unbelievable and erroneous by everyone this vlogger has talked to, to date.

Sources that did not wish to be named assert that Mr. Johnson has been trying to find a reason to “get rid” of Ms. Simmons “since early 2023” because she “wouldn’t play for their team”.

As for Jestin, sources also claim the separation was intended to be cruel and to humiliate LaTonda Simmons. There was no request for her to retire or to resign. Sources say Mr. Johnson is in possession of a doctor’s note written for LaTonda Simmons and knows she has been at home with a broken ankle for the last three weeks. Simmons was also put on modified duty through August 11 2025.

Ms. Simmons is in a cast and her benefits terminate this month. She’s served the City of Oakland for 23 years. 23 years of well-regarded and celebrated service.

That’s why this vlogger says that what Mr. Jestin Johnson did to LaTonda Simmons was an illegal, classless, jerk move. Because, it was. Check California law.

In California, In general, it is illegal for an employer in California to fire an employee while on sick leave, or for using accrued sick leave. California law protects employees from retaliation for using their accrued sick leave, including termination. It’s surprising that of all people, the Chief Administrative Officer of Oakland would not know that.

Moreover, In California, an employer generally cannot fire an employee who is on medical leave, especially if the leave is covered by the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) or the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). However, an employer may be able to terminate an employee on medical leave if there are legitimate, non-discriminatory reasons for doing so that are unrelated to the leave itself. According to Zennie62Media sources, Mr. Johnson does not have such a reason.

For those who claim Johnson can fire Simmons because she’s an at will employee, even that isn’t really the case. In California, an employer cannot fire an employee for reporting illegal activity, participating in an investigation, or exercising their rights under laws like the Family and Medical Leave Act

In the case of Ms. Simmons, the observation one source made that Jestin Johnson has been “trying to get rid” of LaTonda since 2023 points to a personal aimus that (depending on what it is) may very well make his action undeniably illegal. For example, did he make a pass or romantic overture toward her? It’s public information that Johnson divorced his wife in Atlanta, then seemingly sought refuge in pursuing the Oakland City Administrator position, and then relocated after he secured the role. Thus, he comes to Oakland a newly single man.

That does open the possibility that such an encounter could have happened. For those who claim that there are other reasons to want to fire Ms. Simmons, an admittedly cursory check does not point to any claim against her that could be strong enough to cost LaTonda her job.
