Derek Carr announced his retirement from football today. The man once the star QB for the Oakland Raiders and Las Vegas Raiders has called it quits today.

After months of awkward chop, the Saints and quarterback Derek Carr managed to figure out a smooth landing.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Carr’s retirement comes with an agreement regarding his contract.

In a nutshell, he’ll give up $30 million in fully-guaranteed pay. That was his base salary for 2025, which the Saints opted to convert to a mostly-prorated payment in March.

Carr will keep a $10 million roster bonus he earned in March. Also, the Saints will not seek recovery of the remaining allocation of his $28.5 million signing bonus, which he received in 2023.

Carr could have undergone shoulder surgery, not played this year, pocketed the $30 million, and made a decision about his future at some point down the road.

Carr finishes with a 65.1 percent career completion percentage, and 41,245
yards thrown for 9 years with the Oakland Raiders and Las Vegas Raiders and then the New Orleans Saints. He has a career passer rating of 92.8.

Who replaces him? The Saints have no veteran quarterback – they should get Jameis Winston.

As Sports Illustrated writer Brandon Olsen put it:

While the Saints have a new coaching staff and offensive system, Winston was beloved during his time in New Orleans and has a reputation for being an elite teammate and leader.

I believe Jameis Winston should get the chance to be the starter for the Saints, again. And in an offense that is based on play action and movement, not so much the deep ball.
