Oakland To AASEG Coliseum Land Sale Delay As Alameda County Blocks Las Vegas Oakland Athletics
Oakland To AASEG held up by the County screwing with the Oakland A’s? If you have been around the block in Oakland, you recall the times that the City of Oakland clashed with the County of Alameda over some issue at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. You name it; there was some issue.
I recall the 1996 UMAX Naming Rights Deal that never happened. The City of Oakland wanted it but the County of Alameda put up roadblocks and so did the Oakland Raiders. Then, Oakland Councilmember Ignacio De La Fuente tried to save the deal but backed off and waited for Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris’ instructions. Ultimately, the deal fell to who would pay Lin Longmier, the Raiders employee who actually brought the parties together to start naming right talks. Oakland punted. The deal died.
Then there was the May 2015 NFL Meeting at Raiders Headquarters where an irate Councilmember Nate Miley left the meeting that included NFL Stadium Point Man Eric Grubman, and fired off a press release announcing the County wanted out of the sports business – because of it’s fractured partnership with Oakland.
Now (skipping over a huge number of issues for brevity) we have lawyers for the County of Alameda playing wack-a-mole with the Oakland Athletics over the state of the stadium as its turned over to the County, which would then turn it over to AASEG. Remember the A’s had originally sought to own the Coliseum Stadium. Well, that contract is still being undone before AASEG can claim ownership and the City of Oakland can get its money.
Those who are quick to blame AASEG for the slow pace of the deal forget that this is really another example of how poorly Oakland Government handles its business in the 21st Century. At a recent JPA Meeting, I said in the public comment period that their should be a special task force overseeing the land transfer and with a time table and meeting dates. Well, they did not listen.
What we have is the County Lawyers finding new things to stick on the A’s. Now you get why Marc Badain was selected Athletics President; to deal with Oakland and finish the ballpark in Las Vegas. Marc has a foot in both cities, so he was a logical next-man up after Dave Kaval left.
But will the County of Alameda ever get its act together and do these matters efficiently and not, as one observer put it, like its amateur hour? Checklist, time table, meeting dates, two months, then done. Where’s the County Supes on this?
