Oakland – (Special to ZennieReport.com) – On Wednesday afternoon, as the NBA descends on the Bay Area for its annual All Star Game, McClymonds High in West Oakland is celebrating one of its most successful graduates, and one of the most celebrated basketball players and sports figures of all time. The late Bill Russell graduated from McClymonds in 1952 after he led the Warriors to two State Titles before winning two National Championships at the University of San Francisco. He then headed to the Boston Celtics where he won a record 11 NBA titles, and finished as Most Valuable Player five times, while also winning an Olympic Gold Medal. For his basketball prowess, and his leadership in the fight for civil rights, McClymonds High School elected to rename its newly renovated gymnasium in Bill Russell’s honor. The OUSD Board of Education approved the plan in January.
On Wednesday, the school community will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new gym before the school basketball teams’ Senior Night activities and games.
There are numerous additional NBA and basketball-related events happening for OUSD students in the coming days, and OUSD News will release additional information soon.
